Six WHLers were named to Team Canada Wahead of the World U-17 Hockey Challenge set to take place in Charlottetown and Summerside, P.E.I.
The World's best U-17 players are set to light up Prince Edward Island at this year's World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Among them will be 14 WHL players that have been split between Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. Here is a look at the six players that will be representing Team White at the tournament.
A dynamic player when the puck is on his stick; expect to hear Cameron Schmidt's name called a lot during the tournament. He is very confident with the puck on his stick for a 16-year-old and can blow by defenders with his elite speed. Expect him to play a big role in the offence, not just at five-on-five but also on the power play.
What makes Cole Temple such a special player is his ability to read the play. When the puck is on his stick, he can identify weaknesses in coverage and exploit them with his strong puck handling and speed. Teams should be wary of giving him too much space; otherwise, they could be picking the puck out of the back of their net with regularity.
Listed at 5'11", 190 pounds, Joby Baumller is a player who understands how to use his size to his advantage. He is hard to knock off the puck and knows how to drive the net hard to create scoring chances. A player who is strong in the defensive zone as well; watch for him to get some time on the penalty kill during the tournament.
While Will Sharpe is a good two-way defender who can contribute offensively, he is strongest in his own zone. He can defend against the rush and is strong along the boards, using his size to create turnovers. He is set to play a depth role for Canada White; he could be one of those players who gets elevated up the lineup due to strong play in the preliminary round.
Blake Fiddler is a smart, offensively gifted defender who can hit teammates with perfect cross-ice passes. He isn't afraid to join the rush and can get the puck on the net through traffic. Projected to play on the team's third pairing, he should be able to provide Team White with some decent production from the blue line.
Despite not yet playing a game at the WHL level this year, Koen Cleaver earned a spot on Team White. The Lethbridge Hurricanes prospect was named CSSHL U-17 Goaltender of the Year last season after going 14-5-2 with the Pacific Coast Academy U17 Prep team and even had the chance to get into two WHL games. He is expected to play games at this tournament but will enter as Team White's backup for the event.
Canada Red plays their first game on November 2nd against Czechia as they look to be crowned Champions for the first time since 2015.
