The 20-year-old sits second on the Royals in goals, assists and points.
The Victoria Royals are one of the hottest teams in the WHL of late, with a big reason being the play of Dawson Pasternak. The 20-year-old has 35 points through his first 29 games and could tie his career high in points before the calendar flips to 2024. Acquired from the Brandon Wheat Kings in October, he brings value to the Royals lineup on a nightly basis.
Pasternak has made the most of his opportunities since being traded to Victoria. He is setting career highs in multiple statistical categories and is leading by example on the ice. As he explains, he is having fun being a Royal, which has led to his strong play this season.
"It's awesome," said Pasternak." It's a great city to live in, a great group of guys, and the coaching is really awesome, so I'm having a really good time."
When watching Pasternak play, one noticeable trait is his confidence. Whether through his playmaking ability or willingness to fight along the boards for loose pucks, this is a player who will do whatever it takes to win. Overall, it is clear he is trying to make a statement in what is his final WHL season.
"Just confidence. I've got nothing to lose at this point. It's my last year of junior, and I'm just trying to do everything I can to help the team out. I feel like I'm getting a really good opportunity here, and have really good chemistry with my linemate so far this year."
At this rate, Pasternak will have the opportunity to play in the postseason for the first time in his career. He has worked hard to get to this point and is now reaping the benefits as a member of the Royals. A player that often flies under the radar, teams should be wary when they see number 29 jump over the boards.
