Abbey Murphy is one of the best in the world. Playing for the Minnesota Golden Gophers women's hockey team this season, she's also one of the toughest customers on the ice.
It's this combination of speed, skill, offensive talent, grit, and a willingness to not only play on the line, but cross it from time to time, that has Murphy on the precipice of joining a notorious club.
Following last weekend's series against St. Thomas, Murphy's penalty minute total climbed to 91 through 28 games. She's coupled that with 45 points in that span.
Should she crack the 100 penalty minute mark, Murphy will become only the 13th player in NCAA women's hockey history to eclipse the 100 penalty minute total in a single season.
What's more remarkable however, is that she'd do so with the second highest point total in history.
The current record belongs to US Hockey Hall of Famer Jocelyne Lamoureaux from 2010-2011 when she recorded 57 points and 100 penalty minutes in 33 games.
Should she stay at her current rates, Murphy is projected to finish the season with 51 points and 110 penalty minutes.
The most penalty minutes ever recorded in a season came from defender Megan Young in 2001-2002. That season the Quinnipiac blueliner amassed 144 penalty minutes in 32 games, while recording two assists.
The University of Minnesota women's hockey record is held by defender Courtney Kennedy, who would later represent Team USA at both the World Championships and Olympic Games. Kennedy notched 38 points in 38 games along with 114 penalty minutes back in 1999-2000.
