Mark Johnson has become the first NCAA women's hockey coach to reach 600 wins, reaching the mark with a 9-0 Wisconsin win over Minnesota State.
Wisconsin Badgers head coach Mark Johnson became the first coach in NCAA women's hockey history to reach 600 wins as his Badgers swept their series against Minnesota State.
After pulling to win 599 on Thursday, Wisconsin beat Minnesota State 9-0 Friday night to give Johnson his 600th win. Not only is he the first coach in NCAA women's hockey history to reach the mark, he's just the ninth coach in men's or women's NCAA hockey to reach to milestone.
“It's not about me. It's a number, obviously been around a long time, and I got great support staff," said Johnson of reaching the milestone.
"I got great assistant coaches. We've got a lot of good players and we’ve had a lot of good teams, and what I like is the relationship that we've created between our fans, the community and our hockey team. So, you know, 20-some years ago we had women's hockey, but today, a lot of people know and come and support a program.”
Johnson is a member of both the IIHF Hall of Fame and US Hockey Hall of Fame, and as a player was a member of the historic 1980 Miracle on Ice Olympic gold medal winning Team USA.
Johnson started his coaching career with Wisconsin in 1996 as an assistant coach and took over as head coach of Wisconsin in 2002.
