Abbey Murphy finished off Minnesota's 4-2 win over Minnesota-Duluth with a breakaway slapshot into an empty net.
It was one of the most controversial moments of the NHL season. Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig skated in on a breakaway with Toronto's goaltender pulled, and instead of sliding it into the empty net, he wound up and buried a slapshot.
What followed was a cross check to the head by Toronto Maple Leafs defender Morgan Rielly that resulted in a five game suspension.
On Saturday, women's hockey star Abbey Murphy, a member of USA's national team, copied Greig's slapshot move into an empty net to give her University of Minnesota Golden Gophers a 4-2 win over the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.
Murphy, 21, score the goal in the dying seconds of their season finale. It was her 31st goal of the season in only 34 games. Murphy finished the year with 51 points and 101 penalty minutes in that span.
“Really competitive, tough, physical game today, both teams really wanted it,” Minneosta head coach Brad Frost said following the game.
Minnesota finished their season with a 25-7-2 record and will host the Minnesota State Mavericks for the first round of the WCHA Tournament next weekend, as the teams will battle in a best-of-three series at Ridder Arena.
