
The NCAA's stars came out to play on the opening day of the season, including a shutout performance from reigning goalie of the year Gwyneth Philips.

NCAA women's hockey got underway this weekend with #5 Northeastern, #9 Clarkson, and #13 St. Cloud State all picking up wins. Here's a look at the highlights from opening day.
Reigning NCAA goaltender of the year Gwyneth Philips picked up where she left off making 27 saves for Northeastern as they beat Penn State 1-0.
"I was pretty happy with my performance, but I was even more excited about my team's performance," Philips said in a post game interview.
Rookie Peyton Compton scored the only goal of the game, a powerplay marker to give the Northeastern Huskies the win.
Mercyhurst shutout Post 5-0 to open their season and for the team that toured Sweden this offseason, their opener was also an international affair.
Thea Johansson had a goal and two assists to lead the way, while Sofia Nuutinen and Sofia Ljung each got their first career NCAA goals. Ena Nystrom faced only seven shots, but stopped them all in the shutout.
Also scoring for Mercyhurst were veterans Sara Boucher and Kylee Mahoney.
Nicole Gosling and Anne Cherkowski paced the scoring for Clarkson, who looked like the contender they're predicted to be with an opening 5-0 win over Merrimack.
Michelle Pasiechnyk stopped 15 shots for the shutout, while USA national team blueliner Haley Winn chipped in with a pair of assists in the win
