
Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Jennifer Wakefield has joined the University of Ottawa's coaching staff full-time.

Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Jennifer Wakefield is taking on a full-time assistant coaching role with the University of Ottawa GeeGees women's hockey team.
"I am really appreciative for this amazing opportunity to be part of the coaching staff here at uOttawa, and part of an athletic department that recognizes and celebrates all athletes," said Wakefield in a press release. "I am excited to get to work in pursuit of team success."
Ottawa's former assistant Stefanie McKeough was promoted to head coach in July, creating the opening.
Wakefield, 34, has served as an assistant coach with the Netherlands' national team for two seasons, and also assisted with Almtuna IS in Sweden.
Last season, Wakefield played with Sweden's MoDo scoring 23 goals and 37 points in 28 games in the SDHL Wakefield has played more than 100 games for Canada's national team, considered one of the most dominant power forwards of the past decade. The former Boston University captain was rumored to be joining the PHF's Toronto Six this season before the PHF was acquired by the Mark Walter Group.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Wake to the Gee-Gees family," said McKeough. "She brings a wealth of experience at all levels of the game and I can't wait to see the impact that she has on our players and this program as a whole."
Ottawa will open their RSEQ season October 13. Next year Ottawa will join the OUA.
