Robert Morris got their first win since the 2019-2020 season, following a multi-season hiatus from NCAA action this weekend beating Union 3-2 in overtime.
With 1:51 remaining in overtime, Morgan Giannone went backhand on a breakaway beating Union netmnder Sophie Matsoukas top shelf for the win.
"It's an exciting day to be a Colonial! The look on the girls face after that win was something our staff will never forget and a moment they will remember for a long time. We learned from some mistakes last night, corrected them and refused to give up. It was a great character win for this team," said RMU head coach Logan Bittle.
After falling behind 2-0 in the game, Thalia D'Elia got the Robert Morris Colonials on the board, in the third period. Giannone tied the game two minutes later shorthanded.
Giannone was one of several members of the Robert Morris roster who joined via the transfer portal. Still only 19, Giannone played 34 games last season for St. Lawrence University recording a single goal. In Saturday's win over Union, she eclipsed that total in a single outing.
Another Colonials addition through the transfer portal was netminder Emma Gorski, who made 27 saves in the win. Gorski joined Robert Morris after four seasons at Merrimack.
