The St. Thomas Tommies beat Minnesota State to capture the 2023 US Hockey Hall of Fame Face-off Classic.

The St. Thomas Tommies took their first win, a 4-1 victory, against the Minnesota State Mavericks this week at the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Face-off Classic.

After Shelbi Guttormson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, St. Thomas stormed back powered by their young stars to earn the win. Ellah Hause evened things up for the Tommies midway through the first period, followed minutes later by Ella Boerger.

In the third, it was all Tommies again with Rylee Bartz and Nicole Vallario rounding out the scoring.

"It's a big win," said head coach Joel Johnson. "Playing against a team that is receiving votes in the national polls is a big win for us. Minnesota State is a good program, we compete against teams like that every weekend in the WCHA, and it's just fun to get the win."

Boerger finished with three points, while Bartz and Vallario each had two.

In net, graduate goaltender Calla Frank made 21 saves against her former school to pick up the win.
