The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds captured their third straight Canada West title punching their ticket to the national championships in Saskatoon.
The University of British Columbia completed their three-peat this week as Canada West women's hockey champions.
The championship series against the University of Alberta came down to a third and deciding game after UBC won the opener, fell 2-1 to Alberta in game two, and eventually, secured the victory with a 4-2 win on Sunday.
"This win is really special; it's setting history," said UBC head coach Graham Thomas. "This group has been so resilient and has had so much character. Honestly, it's a whole staff effort. It's the players, the medical team, the support staff, the equipment managers, the video coaches, the assistant coaches, the alumni, it's everybody who is supporting us and pushing us. There was a lot of pressure and we had to rise to the challenge. We're just so proud of this group."
After Mackenzie McCallum opened the scoring in the first period, UBC fell behind 2-1 heading to the third period.
In the third however, the UBC Thunderbirds scored three unanswered. Only 1:41 into the third, Sierre LaPlante tied the game. Then just beyond the midway point of the frame, Cassidy Rhodes scored the winner, and Annalise Wong added insurance into the empty net with only 14 seconds remaining.
The win sends the University of British Columbia to the USports national championships which will take place March 14-17, 2024 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
