The University of New Brunswick Reds captured their third straight Atlantic University title punching their ticket to the national championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The University of New Brunswick women's hockey team won their third straight Atlantic University Sport championship, beating St. FX in double overtime. Sydney Oitomen scored the double OT winner to lift the Reds to a 2-1 decision.
"We're feeling pretty good about ourselves," said UNB captain Payton Hargreaves. "It's such a big accomplishment for the program and the girls in this room. Not just the ones that are on this ice but all the girls that came before us that got this program started."
Oitoman was also named the AUS playoff MVP.
"It's an amazing honour," said Oitomen. "But obviously I didn't do it by myself. It's a team game. Really, it's the MVP for the UNB REDS, so yeah it feels awesome."
After falling behind only 29 seconds into the game, UNB veteran netminder Kendra Woodland made 39 stops giving her team a chance to come back. In the third period, Marisa Valla took a pass from Oitomen before beating St. FX's netminder glove side to tie the game and force overtime, where Oitomen would end it.
The U SPORTS women's hockey national championships March 14 to 17, at the University of Saskatchewan.
