One of the best goaltenders in NCAA hockey and on the international stage, Pia Dukaric, announced her retirement.
The 24-year-old was an All-American in 2023 and a Patty Kazmaier Award nominee while playing for Yale. She's also the four-time Best Goaltender at the IIHF World Championships while representing Slovenia.
"After years of giving this game everything I had, it’s time to say goodbye to hockey," Dukaric wrote on social media. "From early mornings to late nights, wins and heartbreaks, this sport has shaped me into who I am in more ways than I can count."
"I am grateful beyond words for Yale Hockey, every teammate, coach, and supporter who’s been part of this journey. I am grateful for the honor of wearing the Slovenian jersey year after year. These were truly some of the most unforgettable moments of my life."
Dukaric finished her career at Yale with a 68-34-6 record including 22 shutouts. She posted a career 1.64 GAA and .926 save percentage. Dukaric was the 2023 ECAC Goaltender of the Year.
While Dukaric's absence will be felt for Yale, it will be a tremendous hit to Slovenia's national team where she's been the cornerstone of that team for years. Dukaric did not play in the recent Division 1B World Championships in Great Britain. Slovenia was outscored 8-46 going winless, and being relegated to the Division 2A tournament next year.
Dukaric leaves Yale as the program's all-time leader in wins and shutouts.
