Canada shutout Switzerland 3-0 to improve to 2-0 at the 2024 IIHF women's World Championships in Utica, New York.
UTICA, NY -- Canada controlled the play from start to finish in their second game of the 2024 IIIHF women's World Championships.
Less than two minutes into the game, Natalie Spooner drove out of the corner to the front of the net. After Switzerland's Andrea Brandli stopped her initial attempt, Spooner's PWHL Toronto teammate Emma Maltais finished the play scoring her second of the tournament.
Before the midway point of the opening frame, Sarah Nurse grabbed a turnover in the left circle and went bar down on Brandli to put Canada up 2-0, which is how the game would remain for more than 40 minutes.
Brandli, who had a stellar season with MoDo in the SDHL this year, was strong for Switzerland as she was in their first game of the tournament, a 51-save 4-0 loss to USA.
With Brandli pulled in the final minute, Sarah Fillier collected a puck in the neutral zone and slid home her first of the tournament to make it 3-0.
Emerance Maschmeyer made 15 saves for the shutout.
