The Etobicoke Dolphins are once again well represented internationally for Canada, as forwards Lexie Bertelsen, Sofia Ismael, Ava Wood, Rachel Piggott, Riley Sorokan, and defender Sydney Sawyer look to help Canada bounce back from a disappointing bronze medal last year. They, along with their teammates, opened the 2025 U-18 Women’s World Championship with a 6-2 win against a Slovakian team whom they’ve only faced once before, a 7-0 Canada win back in 2022.

The line of Bertelsen, Ismael, Piggott made up the best line for Canada in this game, as they created high danger chances on every shift. Bertelsen and Piggott in particular were fantastic all game long, distributing the puck well and finding lanes for each to get great looks. This consistent play by Bertelsen resulted in a primary assist on Primerano’s third period goal.

Sawyer was unafraid all game long to activate from the blueline and showcased her terrific stick handling abilities, dangling around the opposition with ease while standing tall in her own end.

Wood made great work in her limited time on ice as Canada’s 13th forward and created some great chances, resulting in a secondary assist on Primerano’s third period goal. Sorokan displayed her strength on the puck as she drove to the net, creating multiple scoring opportunities, especially late in the game.

In all, a great debut for the six Dolphins in this game, as two ended up on the scoresheet and all impacted this game, a 6-2 victory for Canada. Next game for Canada is tomorrow at 1:30 EST against Switzerland.
