Laura Fortino has signed with the EWHL's Bolzano Eagles and is aiming to lead Team Italy to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Laura Fortino was a cornerstone of Team Canada's national team blueline for the better part of a decade. That's why when she didn't declare for the PWHL Draft, specifically following a strong season with Team Harvey's in the PWHPA last year, it raised eyebrows.
But Fortino had good reason. Instead of playing in the new PWHL, Fortino is aiming for the 2026 Olympics, not as a member of Team Canada, but as a member of the host Italians.
Fortino, 32, has made the decision to play this season with the Bolzano Eagles in the EWHL, and word toward leading Team Italy into the 2026 Olympics.
"At this time in my career I am humbled and honored to share a new exciting opportunity that will allow me to continue my hockey journey in Italy," Fortino wrote on her Instagram. "I am proud to announce that I have signed with the Bolzano Eagles Professional Women’s Team and will be a part of the Italian National Team working towards the 2026 Winter Olympics."
In her post, Fortino thanks her coaches and teammates from Hockey Canada, but stated this is an opportunity to explore her Italian roots.
"I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and exploring my family roots, in particular my grandparents Italian heritage has allowed me the privilege of a dual citizenship. I am now a proud dual citizen of Canada and Italy," she wrote.
Fortino won Olympic and World Championship gold with Canada, being named both an Olympic and World Championship All-Star in her career, as well as being named CWHL Defender of the Year. Now, she's looking to add another accolade to her resume, by representing Italy in international competition.
"I am so grateful and blessed to all who assisted in the process in making this new dream a reality....Looking forward to meeting my new teammates and coaches! Forza Italia "
