Spain is moving up in the women's hockey world capturing gold at the Division 2A World Championships to earn promotion to the Division 1B category next year.

After falling in a shootout to Iceland to open the tournament, Spain's women's national team rebounded.

They posted back-to-back shutouts over Mexico, winning 6-0, and DPR Korea 4-0 to get back on track. Next up was a lopsided 7-1 win over Chinese Taipei to set up a deciding game against Poland.

    Spain Upsets Poland

Hosts Poland were the favorite to earn promotion. Instead, they'll remain in Division 2A after Spain beat Poland 4-2 in a deciding game. The regulation win gave Spain 13 points in the tournament, while Poland had 12.

Indira Bosch opened the scoring for Spain only 2:44 into the game, but less than three minutes later Julia Lapinska answered for Poland. Claudia Castellanos kept the back and forth scoring going scoring for Spain less than three minutes later.

Castellanos, 18, is set to make history next season joining Lindenwood University as her nation's first ever NCAA Division 1 women's hockey player.

Before the first was out, Vega Munoz added Spain's third goal, which would eventually stand as the game winner sending her nation up the women's hockey ladder.

After Haizea Fernandez scored again for Spain in the second, Poland fought hard to get back into the game. Joanna Strzelecka pulled Poland within two, but Carolina Moreno shut the door in net for Spain stopping 27 shots in the win.

Slovenia and Kazakhstan will face off tomorrow to see who remains in Division 1B and who is relegated to take Spain's place in Division 2A.
