Jenni Hiirikoski's Olympics, what were almost certainly the 38 year old's final Olympic women's hockey tournament, have come to an end. Hiirikoski, the most decorated defender in women's hockey history and a future Hockey Hall of Famer has been ruled out due to injury and will require surgery.
Hiirikoski was injured during Finland's final preliminary round game against Canada. Leijonat says the injury, classified as an upper body injury, will require surgery. Hiirikoski confirmed the situation publicly.
"I had an unfortunate injury that means I can no longer play. It's really sad that the games are being left unfinished," Hiirikoski said in a translated comment.
Two time Olympic Games Best Defender, a three-time Olympic All-Star, and three-time Olympic bronze medalist, Hiirikoski was playing in her fifth Olympic tournament for Finland.
"It has been a pleasure and an honor to be part of this team. Good luck for tonight's game!" Hiirikoski said.
"It's especially sad for Jenni herself. She's a big part of this team and has given us a lot. We all wish Jenni a speedy recovery," said head coach Tero Lehterä.
Hiirikoski missed the 2025 World Championships, a tournament where she has been named Best Defender seven times, due to a heart issue that required surgery. She returned to SDHL play and looked sharp in pre-Olympic competition.
Hiirikoski's contract with Lulea in the SDHL is set to expire at this season.
