Canada was stagnant, and now has a refreshed lineup. USA recently completed their build, but may need to find new ways to use the same ingredients, or infuse new faces to their own lineup to ensure this dominant American roster continues to get better.

USA Hockey knows what it looks like to build a national team through the gradual integration of NCAA talent. They are at the end of that process, one that began four years before the 2026 Olympics.

Canada on the other hand, is at the very beginning of that process following a silver medal in Milan. It's a spot USA head coach John Wroblewski recognizes well, and he also recognizes the intensity Canada brought as players are not only fighting for roster spots, but now for positioning within those rosters with well established roles and players gone.

"On paper, it looks very similar to what we did four years ago," said Wroblewski. "And that will bring a level of excitement and anticipation. From a hope, from the internal, not only just the staff, but the players. That new wave brings brings all of those components."

Wroblewski also knows what it can bring to the on-ice product. Canada entered their first World Championship pre-tournament game with most expecting they'd lose handily to USA. When the expectations are off, and the process and development supersede result-drive outcomes, good things can happen.

"There's this freedom when you do that as a staff, or you're like, 'we have to see what happens.' That's when a team is really at its best is when the coaching staff can sit back and literally say, 'I'm good with the result.'"

Wroblewski also saw a fresh mix of players that USA didn't know as well, and who brought new elements to Canada's lineup. Other the past year, Canada's attack had grown stale. It's something USA is currently looking to avoid having won World and Olympic gold. It could result in new ingredients entering USA's lineup to combat the fresh outlook Canada is witnessing.

"Sometimes when you're working with the same ingredients, then there's a desire because your team does have to always improve or you're left with probably a diminishing product," said Wroblewski. "It's almost impossible to just plateau. The only way to advance players that you already have is to tweak a little bit. And does that, how does that disrupt the ecosystem and what players expect?
So there's just a lot, a lot of interesting things to unpack for one rivalry game."

Whether that unpacking results in USA shaking up their roster or not is yet to be seen, but the new ingredients in the lineup for Canada have certainly turned a diminishing product into one on an upward trajectory.
