When PWHL Detroit selected Sena Catterall in the fifth round, 51st overall, they were picking a dual sport star. Catterall, who captained Clarkson in the NCAA this season was a member of the Canadian national team, albeit Canada's national women's baseball team.

Now she'll be playing professional hockey only a few hundred yards from Comerica Park, home of MLB's Detroit Tigers.

Catterall would have been competing as a member of Team Canada this week at the Women's Baseball World Cup group stage alongside the USA, Hong Kong, Australia, Korea, and Mexico. The group stage will take place in Rockford, Illinois from July 22-26.

Catterall was paramount in getting Canada to this point sweeping Peurto Rico three games to none in the Americas qualifying series in May.

In game two of the series, Catterall went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and an inside the park home run. Overall she hit .364 in the series.

In 2023, Catterall, and outfielder was Baseball Canada's Ashley Stephenson Award recipient for her on-field contributions, followed by being named the Women's National Team MVP in 2024. She won bronze with Canada at the 2023 World Cup being named to the tournament All-World Team and winning the tournament's Best Defensive Player. She also led the World Cup in both most runs scored with ten, and most stolen bases with six. 

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen male or female, a better all around baseball player,” said  . women’s National Team manager Anthony Pluta in 2025. “She makes plays that I don't think are possible, and then you turn around and she's catching the ball."

On the ice, Catterall had 17 goals and 33 points in 35 games this season while captain Clarkson, coming off career-highs of 19 goals and 37 points in 40 games a year ago.

Now, the tenacious two-way forward hopes to bring a bit of her on-ice success to Detroit and the PWHL. Instead of an offseason of baseball, Catterall is all in on the PWHL.
