Day two of the 2025 Esso Cup finished with only one remaining undefeated team, the Edmonton Jr. Oilers, and the remainder fighting for positioning in round robin play.
Here's a look at what happened.
Edmonton Jr. Oilers Remain Undefeated
Facing their Alberta rivals the Llyodminster Steelers, the Edmonton Jr. Oilers held on for a hard fought 2-1 win. Edmonton is now the only undefeated team in the tournament.
In the third period, Keira Grant scored the difference maker for the Oilers on the power play. It was Edmonton's second power play goal of the game as Parker Small scored with the extra attacker in the second period. Defender Ciara Lang assisted on both.
“It was a tough game tonight," said Grant. "We worked hard and we knew what we had to do to get it done. We realized that this was an important game, and we couldn’t give them any room. Lloydminster is a tough team to play, lots of close games against them. They push us to get better every time.”
Quebec's Stars Beat Saskatchewan's Stars
After an opening game loss to Edmonton, Laurentides-Lanaudière beat Saskatoon in a battle of teams nicknamed the Stars.
In the second period, Maika Gauthier scored a natural hat trick in 4:05 of play to give Étoiles a 3-0 lead.
Before the period was out, Saskatoon cut the lead to one on goals from Halle Duchene and Sadie Green.
Late in the third however, Ann-Laurence Dutil and Miranda Dinelle scored to reclaim a three goal lead for Laurentides-Lanaudière en route to a 5-2 win.
"It felt good to get the win. We didn't get the result we'd hoped for in yesterday's game," said Gauthier. "We got off to a good start and that led us to maintain a good tempo throughout the match. We played a good team game and had some good chances on the power play. We stayed confident at the end of the game and that helped us get the win."
The North York Storm entered as a favorite after winning silver at the tournament last year. Through two games they've been riding their top line including the scoring of Lily Paisley. After scoring twice in North York's opening game, Paisley scored four goals for North York against the Eastern Stars to held guide them to a 7-2 win.
We were ready to play our best hockey. Today our team was more confident and way more relaxed—it was all business today and we came to the rink ready to play. We have been a successful high-scoring team all year long, we just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing," said North York head coach George Trifon.
Ella Harding had four assists and Demi Lararou had three helpers.
Defender Taylor Hunter scored both goals for the Eastern Stars.
