The Hockey News - THN Archive: Toronto Aeros Win First Ever NWHL Title In 2000

In 2000, the original iteration of the National Women's Hockey League was completing their first season, with the Toronto Beatrice Aeros. Here's what THN staff wrote about the team in 2000:

Toronto’s Beatrice Aeros added another award to their trophy case by capturing the first National Women’s League title.

One week after winning the Canadian national title while representing Ontario, the Aeros took the first Millennium Cup with a two-game series victory over the Sainte-Julie Panthers March 18-19.

“It has been a long year,” said captain Angela James. “We played almost 60 games.”

After a 2-2 tie in the first game, Toronto’s Cherie Piper scored the only goal of the second contest in front of 400 fans in Brampton, Ont. Toronto goalie Lauren Goldstein earned the shutout.

The first-year NWHL has teams in Ontario and Quebec and is aiming to grow into a North American pro league. It is currently amateur.
