Tricia Deguire will step behind the bench with the QMJHL's Sherbrooke Phoenix this month.
Deguire was hired by the team earlier this season as a video coach, but will step in as head coach Gilles Bouchard departs for the World Junior championships.
“Tricia knows our team well since she has already been part of our coaching staff since the start of the season," said Philippe Sauvé, Sherbrooke's general manager. "It was therefore only natural to offer her the position of assistant in order to support Jonathan Deschênes at the helm of the team in Gilles' absence. We are proud to see a first woman occupy a coaching position behind the Phoenix bench."
Jonathan Deschênes will serve as interim head coach in Bouchard's absence.
Deguire, a former netminder, played for the PHF's Montreal Force last season. She'll make her on-bench coaching debut on December 28, and also be behind the bench for the Phoenix on December 30 and December 31.
