Aerin Frankel has been dubbed Boston's Green Monster. Like the famed wall at Fenway Park, she's blocking shots where others would score. Can anyone beat her?
Once upon a time, there was one player, Marie-Philip Poulin, anointed with a nickname that identified her as the premier big game player in women's hockey. That nickname of course, is Captain Clutch.
In the PWHL semi-final between Boston and Montreal however, Captain Clutch met her match in The Green Monster.
That nickname came from the series' broadcasting team, and was placed upon Boston netminder Aerin Frankel. Specifically, TSN's Kenzie Lalonde can be credited with the nickname, and it fit.
Frankel ironically, is no monster in stature, but the 5-foot-5 netminder was a monster in her play posting a 0.97 GAA and 0.972 save percentage in Boston's three game sweep over higher seeded Montreal.
Frankel made two 50+ save performances in the series, and has been almost unbeatable since returning from the IIHF World Championships.
For those who don't know, the Green Monster is a famous structure in Boston. In particular, it's a 37-foot-2-inch-high wall at Fenway Park, home of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox. The tallest outfield wall in MLB, the Green Monster is famous for blocking home runs on line drives that would otherwise clear walls in other ball parks.
Enter Aerin Frankel. She may not stand as the tallest "wall" in the PWHL, but she's certainly stopped shots that other netminders would not have in the PWHL playoffs, earning a nickname which could stick in the process.
