With talent thinned across the PWHL following a large scale four-team expansion this season, the loss of a single top scorer can be catastrophic for a team. That's why the return of Kendall Coyne Schofield to the Minnesota Frost's lineup marks a significant boost for their attack.
Through two consecutive years of expansion, the Minnesota Frost have remained one of the least impacted rosters up front. While they've watched Sophie Jaques, Claire Thompson, Kendall Cooper, and Mae Batherson, Mellissa Channell-Watkins, and Madison Bizal leave their blueline for expansion teams, the impact up front has been lesser.
This season however, the Frost felt their first thaw in their attack as Britta Curl-Salemme signed in Detroit, Abby Hustler joined Hamilton, and Katy Knoll signed in Las Vegas.
With the prospect of Kendall Coyne Schofield stepping away this season, it would have meant six of their top ten scorers, including four of their top seven forwards gone.
But with Kendall Coyne Schofield back in the mix, Minnesota looks to have again weathered the storm up front with Taylor Fox (Heise), Kelly Pannek, Grace Zumwinkle, and Coyne Schofield returning. They'll be joined by draft pick Viivi Vainikka, and the team could also get a boost from the healthy return of Dominique Petrie to their lineup.
It's still a step down from their top six of last season, but in the talent dispersed PWHL that saw four new rosters formed via expansion, it's a top six that will rival most in the league.
Last season Coyne Schofield finished tied for sixth in the PWHL in scoring, and fourth on the high octane Frost, with 23 points despite missing seven games due to an injury she suffered at the 2026 Olympics where she won gold with Team USA.
She was one of only three players in the league alongside Kelly Pannek (1.10) and Taylor Fox (1.00) to average 1.00 points per game or more. In fact, in three seasons of PWHL action, only five players have ever averaged a point per game, a list which also includes Marie-Philip Poulin and Natalie Spooner from the league's inaugural season.
Coyne Schofield not only keeps Minnesota's leadership group intact alongside veterans like Pannek and defender Lee Stecklein, but she will help the Frost to continue pushing the pace of their attack. One of the league's best skaters, Coyne Schofield may see another boost in her numbers this season as teams like the Frost will look to capitalize off mismatches facing less experienced, and less mobile defensive depth across the league.
While the Frost may look to spread their talent more evenly, they could also bring back one of their most common trios which saw Kelly Pannek, the league's reigning scoring leader, between Coyne Schofield and Grace Zumwinkle. The chemistry for the group was undeniable, and it will keep one of the league's most potent power play groups together.
The 2026-27 PWHL season will be one of the league's most unpredictable in terms of where teams will finish, and what players will find themselves atop the scoring charts, but the return of Kendall Coyne Schofield to the Minnesota Frost, when her future previously seemed in question, is an unequivocable boost to Minnesota's attack, and their Walter Cup hopes.
