Hockey IQ. A playmaker. Elite on ice vision. Each of these can define Kennedy Marchment, the 2021-2022 PHF most valuable player and 2022-2023 runner up.
Watching clips of Marchment, the first thing you notice is her stick. In front of the net, her eye hand coordination allows her to deflect pucks, knock down passes, and corral pucks that otherwise would be lost. That same stick also effectively closes lanes, checks opponents, and forces turnovers.
When the puck is on her stick, Marchment finds space and draws defenders to her before exposing passing lanes to connect with her linemates. Her favorite target last season, Taylor Girard, benefitted from Marchment's playmaking abilities. She has a knack for sliding pucks under or through defenders.
Marchment however, is not simply a playmaker, she can finish as well. She scored several non-highlight reel goals this season that were simply a result of her offensive zone intelligence, navigating the zone to make herself an option, and not being afraid to play on the goalmouth.
As a shooter, Marchment can expose goaltenders, choosing to shoot as often as pass. It's a play driving tactic she uses to hold goaltenders, outwaiting them before she ultimately chooses her attack.
While there are flashier players in the league, few are as effective in all three zones as Marchment in driving puck possession.
