Gigi Marvin is one of USA Hockey's most decorated players. After stepping away from the game last year, the 36-year-old is attempting a comeback with PWHL Boston.
Watching Gigi Marvin skate with PWHL Boston, she's the most veteran player on the ice, but is also smiling like a kid in a candy story.
Marvin, 36, is attempting a comeback to elite women's hockey after taking a year away from the game. Marvin joined the PWHPA following the dissolution of the CWHL, but stepped away from the organization following the 2021-2022 season. This year when she learned about the formation of the PWHL, it was an opportunity she couldn't pass up.
"I found out the news but even before...I was like, it would be really fun to come back and play hockey," Marvin told The Hockey News. "I just had that desire...I love the game."
Working at her hockey camp, which she's run since playing NCAA hockey at the University of Minnesota, Marvin was already feeling her passion for the game returning, making it the right time for her to attempt a comeback.
"The joy came back, not that it left, but it was so present, I thought, wow, why not, I'll give it a shot."
Marvin is a five-time World Championship gold medalist and also won an Olympic gold medal as a member of Team USA. Along with her gold medals, Marvin has two Olympic and two World silver medals. It's a resume that puts her among the most decorated players in USA Hockey history. In Boston's early skates, Marvin looked sharp, as though she'd never stepped back.
"I'm sure there's a lot of rust... I've been pleasantly surprised, I've had a lot of fun," she said. "I've played the game since I was two years old, so I think it's natural in you, and there's such a love for the game, I think it's been evident with the smile i have when I skate."
Not only is she having fun, but it's the culmination of a dream she and her teammates have lived over the last decade, with Marvin playing with the CWHL's Boston Blades and NWHL's Boston Pride. She now hopes to complete her Boston women's hockey hat trick by playing with PWHL Boston.
"I'm coming to something that we've been a part of, that we've been trying to create for so long and I have so many teammates that just didn't have the opportunity, and thankfully I have the opportunity."
Whether she plays for PWHL Boston this season, or this preseason camp is her last in the game, Marvin has reclaimed her love for the game, and if evidenced by her skill and drive on the ice, Marvin still has more to give to the sport.
