The NHL and NHLPA conducted their annual player poll. One of the questions this year asked which PWHL rule they would adopt for the NHL.
The leading result among the 505 NHL players who responded was that they'd like to implement the Jailbreak rule, which sees a minor penalty end if the shorthanded team scores a goal.
Of the respondents, 29.7% said they'd implement the Jailbreak.
The next closest rule in the NHL/NHLPA poll was the PWHL's 3-2-1 points system. In the PWHL a regulation win gives a team three points, an overtime or shootout win two points, and an overtime or shootout loss one point. The NHL gives two points for any win, and a single point for an overtime or shootout loss. 24.36% of players voted in favor of the PWHL's point system.
The Jailbreak and PWHL's point system were the most popular picks among NHL players.
Other rules receiving votes included the "pick your own opponent" rule where the first place team in the PWHL gets to pick their playoff opponent. That rule received 16.83% of the vote. Next up was the PWHL's variation in a shootout allowing a team to send a shooter as many times as they want without needing to select a new shooter each time. This rule garnered 15.64% of the vote.
The final rule was the absence of the trapezoid where goaltenders can play the puck. It's a rule that used to be part of NHL play, but was changed for the 2005-2006 season. This rule received 13.47% of the vote.
