PWHL Boston made history selecting the first Russian player in league history choosing Ilona Markova 37th overall in the PWHL Draft.

Ilona Markova is a history maker becoming the first player ever from Russia to be selected to play in the PWHL after Boston chose her in the 7th round, 37th overall.

Playing for Agidel Ufa in Russia's ZhHL, Markova notched a career high 40 points in 42 games this season before stepping up her game in the postseason where she recorded 10 points in seven games.

The former captain of Russia's U-18 team was a Russian All-Star this season, and top three player on Russia at the 2021 World Championships. From the slot, she can score as she has a hard shot and good release. Likes to cycle through the offensive zone finding space, and can also be found stretching the zone for a fast break.

She's a good skater who will need time to adapt to the competition level, but has the skill set to be a top six scorer in this league in the right situation.

Boston obviously took the chance on Markova's upside in the draft.

There were some scouts that saw Markova as a top 20 pick in the PWHL Draft based on her skill alone. She could become one of the biggest steals of this draft.
