The University of Minnesota women's hockey team had a wealth of talent committed to play NCAA hockey for the program. Since the program cut ties with head coach Brad Frost, many of the best prospects from Canada and the United States have continued to de-commit from the school.
The University of Minnesota women's hockey program has continued to hemorrhage talent following the firing of long time head coach Brad Frost.
The program has managed to keep their 2026-27 commits, but they lost three of the biggest names in the world for 2027-28, a trio that could have helped Minnesota move within reach of Wisconsin and Ohio State at the top of the WCHA and national rankings.
The first to flip her commitment was USA U-18 national team member Sydney Stoughton. Stoughton made the move only weeks after Frost's firing to join Penn State in Atlantic Hockey America.
More concerning for Minnesota is the loss of their next two commitments in defender Megan Mossey, and this week, Annabelle Lovell. The pairing not only de-committed, but chose to stay in the WCHA with Wisconsin.
Mossey is widely considered one of Canada's top defensive prospects, and is arguably the best 2009 born defender in the nation. She was named a U-18 World Championship All-Star in 2025 after scoring 11 points in six games from Canada's blueline. With the OWHL's Etobicoke Dolphins, a team with all 19 of their members committed to NCAA division 1 programs last season, Mossey scored 36 goals and 69 points in 46 games for the program. Her total was 19 points clear of the league's next highest scoring defender, Renee Lapointe, who is committed to Minnesota-Duluth. Mossey was also named Best Defender leading Team Atlantic to their first ever silver medal at Canada's U-18 national championships.
Lovell played with Stoughton at Lovell Academy winning a national title this season. Over the past two seasons of 16-U 'AAA' Lovell has scored 288 points in 148 games. She's a dynamic player with a U-18 World Championship gold and silver medal, totals she will undoubtedly add to again in 2027.
Minnesota will need to find ways to refill their roster for the 2027-28 season loving their top three commits.
Currently, the program has only Talla Hansen and Jaycee Chatleain, both Minnesota products, still committed for 2027-28. Minnesota will likely lean into the transfer portal after this season to fill their roster needs for 2027-28.
The program has managed to recoup for 2028-29 with elite signings of Callie McCullough, Mackenna Schlieman, Mia Sutch, and Ryann Chimera on the books for that season.
