Ella Shelton scored the first goal in PWHL history, while Corinne Schroeder recorded the first shutout as New York beat Toronto in the historic first game for the league.
The first ever PWHL game took place on New Years Day 2024 between PWHL Toronto and PWHL New York at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
The historic event was played at the former Maple Leaf Gardens in front of a sellout 3850 fans.
In the opening period, Ella Shelton scored the first goal in league history with Alex Carpenter earning the assist to put New York ahead.
During the second, both goaltenders turned away everything they faced sending the game to the third with New York leading 1-0.
The third period saw New York extend their lead with Alex Carpenter going bar down to make it 2-0, followed by Jill Saulnier tapping home the 3-0 marker. Minutes later Kayla Vespa added another to make it 4-0.
Corinne Schroeder would shut the door making 29 saves for the first shutout in league history.
The two teams meet again Friday for New York’s home opener.
