Megan Keller is set to give two girls and women's hockey organizations a significant boost on behalf of the NHL and NHLPA who are donating $100,000 to two groups of Keller's choice.
Keller will be targeting groups in her hometown of Detroit, and her current market in Boston.
“I’m proud to be able to give back to communities that have given me so much – my hometown Detroit, and my current home, Boston,” said Keller in an NHL/NHLPA news release. “Having the opportunity to play elite girls’ hockey set me on a path to collegiate hockey at Boston College, to a gold medal at the Olympics. ‘Dream until your dreams come true’ is a childhood mantra that kept me motivated. This donation will help expand access, and I hope it will give more girls a chance for their dreams to come true.”
The donation comes in recognition of International Women's Day by the NHL and NHLPA. Keller will work alongside the NHL Foundation U.S. and ambassador Haley Skarupa to identify the organizations, which "will have demonstrated impact, sustainability, and alignment with NHL Foundation U.S.’s commitment to growing the girls’ hockey pipeline."
Girls and women's hockey participation in the United States continues to skyrocket and the results are beginning to take shape on the ice. Keller scored the Olympic gold medal winning goal in overtime in Milan, and USA is also the reigning champions of the Rivalry Series, World Championships, Collegiate Series, and U-18 World Championships, giving the nation the title in every existing international competition.
