Pending the waiver period, that ends this afternoon at 3:00 p.m, here’s what the portrait of the Montreal Victoire lineup will look like on game opener.
Because of injuries to Dominika Laskova and Kennedy Marchment, who will start the season on the short-term injury list, the Montreal Victoire is keeping 28 players to start the season.
That is 23 players with a standard contract, three players on the reserve list, and finally, two players on the STIL.
On top of those announced by The Hockey News yesterday, forward and Montreal’s 4th round pick Dara Greig, as well as defender and the team’s 5th round selection, Anna Wilgren, will start the season with a standard contract.
That said, by the PWHL collective agreement, when Laskova and Marchment come back, Montreal could let go or trade any of their non guaranteed contracted players.
On the reserve list, GM Daniele Sauvageau kept three players from her native province. Forward Gabrielle David, as well as defenders Catherine Daoust and Kelly-Ann Nadeau should all start the season as reserves, unless Montreal acquires another player during the waiver period.
Europe doesn’t seem to be an option right now for many, and because of the potential expansion next year, some players are preferring to keep a foot in the PWHL, especially Canadians who play in Canada, where they can have a side job to help financially.
And in Montreal, the story of Catherine Dubois last season, who started on the reserve list and ended up getting a standard contract, weighs a lot in the balance.
Talking about Dubois, her status is still unclear, although she was on the ice on Monday, but couldn’t do any physical contact. We still don’t know if she’s going to be ready for Saturday.
As far as Cayla Barnes, it’s been confirmed that she won’t be starting the season, but what is unknown is if she will be on the short-term injury list or not.
That could affect the status of David or one of the defenders on the reserve list. It’s not impossible that one of them start the season with a 10-day contract deal.
Here’s what the Montreal Victoire lineup should be on November 30:
Marie-Philip Poulin, Laura Stacey, Kristin O’Neill, Lina Ljungblom, Jennifer Gardiner, Maureen Maurphy, Abby Boreen, Alexandra Labelle, Claire Dalton, Clair DeGeorge, Mikyla Grant-Mentis, Dara Greig, Catherine Dubois (injured), Kennedy Marchment (STIL).
Erin Ambrose, Kati Tabin, Amanda Boulier, Mariah Keopple, Anna Kjellbin, Anna Wilgren, Cayla Barnes (injured), Dominika Laskova (STIL)
Ann-Renee Desbiens, Elaine Chuli, Sandra Abstreiter
Gabrielle David, Catherine Daoust, Kelly-Ann Nadeau
