PWHL New York traded down and used their first pick to select the three time reigning SDHL Defender of the Year Maja Nylen Persson.
PWHL New York swapped a trio of draft picks with Boston trading the 7th overall pick to Boston in exchange for picks 10 and 16. With the 10th overall pick, PWHL New York selected back-to-back-to-back SDHL Defender of the Year Maja Nylen Persson.
Maja Nylen Persson has been one of the top offensive defenders in Europe in recent seasons. The 23-year-old Swedish blueliners has scored more than a point per game the past three seasons with Brynas, who she captained this year.
In that span, Nylen Persson recorded 133 points in only 103 games, impressive numbers for a defender.
The right shot blueliner has a pinpoint shot from the blueline, where she makes good decisions with the puck and finds lanes. Her on ice vision is high end allowing Nylen Persson to draw pressure to herself and then distribute the puck.
According to the PWHL hockey operations department, Nylen Persson is "a mobile defender who makes good reads with and without the puck which will buy time in the physical PWHL game. Reliable in all situations, she will step into a top-four role and can lead the offense with first pass decisions or laser shots from the blue line.”
