PWHL Unveils Six Official Team Names: Frost, Fleet, Charge, Sirens, Sceptres, Victoire

The PWHL has officially unveiled PWHL team names for all six franchises - Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge, and Toronto Sceptres.

After more than a year of waiting, fans finally know the six official PWHL team names. The PWHL announced the names for each of their six franchises, which are the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge, and Toronto Sceptres.

Last year the PWHL's original six teams went only by PWHL Boston, PWHL Montreal, PWHL Minnesota, PWHL New York, PWHL Toronto, and PWHL Ottawa. It was a strategy the league said worked wonders for solidifying the league's global brand as the acronym PWHL was written and and spoken across all forms of media more than it ever would have been had the league launched with official team names last year.

Last Fall the PWHL trademarks six team names that were met with mixed reviews. Those names were Boston Wicked, Minnesota Superior, Montreal Echo, New York Sound, Ottawa Alert, and Toronto Torch. 

Those names however, went back to the drawing board following a negative fan response. 

This time around, the PWHL went with names that they developed with local connections in mind, and they did not avoid plural names as they had originally choosing the Toronto Sceptres and New York Sirens.

The Sceptres are an obvious tie to Canada's monarchy, and the provincial capital building in Ontario, Queen's Park. The Sceptres name can be tied to Queen Elizabeth, and more recently to the King, as the royal sceptre is used during coronations. 

The Sirens name comes from Greek mythology of humanlike creatures who lure sailors and others to their death through song. They are often thought to be mermaid like creatures, and played into the Odyssey, which was also a finalist to be the name for New York's team.

In Montreal, fans will likely react positively to a French name in Victoire, one that will have fans and players alike dancing following each win.

Boston Habor is world famous, and now the city will welcome a Fleet to the ice, not only to the water. In Minnesota, a state where outdoor rinks and skating helped grow the game in America, the Frost will represent the reigning Walter Cup champions. Finally, Ottawa's large crowds will be able to cheer Charge in unison next season.
