The PWHL is headed to Vancouver. The league made their formal announcement of an expansion franchise, the first ever expansion team, for Vancouver next season. The team will play out of Pacific Coliseum, and join the league as the PWHL's seventh franchise.
What was also made clear was, the PWHL would like to have an eighth franchise in place for next season as well.
"We are hopeful that we will add a second team going into season three, but at this time we are not ready to say when and where that will be," said PWHL executive vice president of business operations Amy Scheer.
Scheer's message is music to the ears of markets who made their case for a PWHL team. One in particular, Seattle, is believed to be next in line for a team.
Earlier this week the PWHL's online shop briefly showed links and graphics for PWHL Vancouver and PWHL Seattle.
While questions were posed of Scheer about the other potential market, Scheer maintained the league has done their conversations with all markets in private, and intended to continue to do so.
Scheer did however, clarify that this year's expansion, whether one team or two, is only the first step in a plan to expand the league beyond current markets over the next several seasons. Scheer stated that if a market is not selected this year, it does not mean they won't be selected during the second or third rounds of expansion.
