PWHL Vancouver now has 12 players on their roster. It's a group that includes a star studded blueliner, a veteran nation team goaltender, and a mix of skill sets a forward.
Up front, PWHL Vancouver general manager brought in Sarah Nurse and Jennifer Gardiner during free agency. During the draft, she went a different route focusing on two-way role players who will make Vancouver a more difficult team to face.
"We really went with a lot of grit, a lot of two-way forwards that can also score goals, obviously we solidified the back end..." said PWHL Vancouver general manager Cara Gardner Morey following the expansion draft.
It's a group that not only included Nurse and Gardiner, but now includes Brooke McQuigge, Abby Boreen, Izzy Daniel, Denisa Krizova, and Gabby Rosenthal. With a highly competitive group of forwards who can handle the day-to-day physicality and grind of the PWHL, Gardner Morey says her next goal is to target more top six forwards in free agency.
"I think that we're going to look for a couple more... top six forwards in free agency period and see who we might, I guess, lure to Vancouver and who wants to be a part of this amazing team because I think we have the building blocks in place," she said.
Hannah Miller, a Vancouver product who was among league leaders the last two seasons is Vancouver's likely prime target, but the team may also target top six forwards like Susanna Tapani and Tereza Vanisova who would both fit the style and identity the team has already developed. The same could be said for Jesse Compher and Michela Cava who are also available. All four were among the top 20 in PWHL scoring this season.
PWHL free agency opens June 16 at 9am. The PWHL Entry Draft is June 24.
