We know what you're thinking, there's nearly no way to predict what a franchise will be called considering the league named their existing franchises things like Sceptres and Victoire.

The PWHL has gone unique, but there's no telling what they've learned from two seasons of market research on the fly.

    Looking At Vancouver's Historic Names

The most notable Vancouver women's team in history were the Vancouver Amazons. Playing in the 1920s, the Amazons won the 1922 Alpine Cup form the Banff Winter Carnival. It was Western Canada's most prestigious victory. They also played in the first international women's league facing the Victoria Kewpies and Seattle Vamps.

In 2000, a professional women's team played in the original iteration of the NWHL known as the Vancouver Griffins. The Griffins featured Hockey Hall of Famer Cammi Granato.

Looking at other prominent women's and girls teams in the area currently, there are youth girls organizations known as the Fraser Valley Rush, Greater Vancouver Comets, Vancouver Island Seals, Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, and Northern Capitals. That list could go on with the Vancouver Angels and North Shore Avalanche.

Prior to the Amazons, there were women's hockey teams in and around Vancouver. The Rossland Ladies were British Columbia's first notable team forming in 1900 and hosting the Rossland Winter Carnival tournament for 17 years. Their rivals included the Nelson Ladies, and teams traveling from Calgary and other Alberta cities. Newspapers revealed multiple women's hockey clubs playing in Vancouver in 1900-1901 as well.

By 1914, Lester Patrick was heavily involved in building women's teams in the area, which would eventually include the Amazons. That winter, a league played including a Vancouver, Victoria, and Westminster team. It was an attempt that followed a 1906 push from the Nanaimo Ladies to create a provincial league in BC.

Other teams in the Vancouver area during the first three decades of the 1900s included the Blue Jays and Spencer's All-Stars.

What could it mean for a Vancouver name?

For anyone who hasn't visited Vancouver, it's hard to ignore two simple sights in the city - the mountains, and the ocean.

It would not be surprising to see a water inspired name whether it's a whale like the Orca, the Pacific Salmon, seals, sea lions, or something similar to the Fleet in Boston. Other provincial animals like the Steller's Jay, the provinces official bird, osprey or the Spirit Bear.

The mountains of the region provide many other options.

    What names won't be used?

Sometimes the best place to start for a name is those that won't be used. Currently the city of Vancouver is home to a number of professional, semi-professional and college sports teams. Those include teams with the names Canucks, Lions, Whitecaps, Rise, Warriors, Bandits, Giants, Thunderbirds, Red Leafs, Canadians, and Knights.

Former Vancouver teams likely eliminating names include the Grizzlies, Ravens, Blazers, Dragons, Voodoo, Royals, and Riptide.
