As roster building comes into view across the PWHL, one thing has become clear, PWHL Vancouver will be the first team in the league to secure 23 players for their roster.
To date, Vancouver has 17 players rostered via the exclusive signing window, expansion draft, and now PWHL free agency.
When the 2025 PWHL Draft kicks off, Vancouver will be able to add six more players bringing their roster to the league's 23 player requirement.
On their current roster, Vancouver boasts 10 forwards including Sarah Nurse, Jennifer Gardiner, Hannah Miller, Tereza Vanisova, Michela Cava, Brooke McQuigge, Denisa Krizova, Abby Boreen, Izzy Daniel and Gabby Rosenthal.
Miller, Vanisova, and Cava were all free agent signings, while the rest came via the expansion process.
On Vancouver's blueline, the team has secured six players including Claire Thompson, Sophie Jaques, Ashton Bell, and Sydney Bard through expansion, as well as free agent signings Mellissa Channell-Watkins and Emma Greco.
In net, Emerance Maschmeyer was signed via the exclusive expansion signing window.
Overall, the 17 veteran players is a luxury in the PWHL. The Toronto Sceptres currently have the rights to 17 players, but it's a group that includes two players, Anneke Rankila and Noemi Neubauerova who both finished the year as reserves.
At the draft, PWHL Vancouver will spend most of their picks filling out their forward group, but may also target a goaltender as one of the teams who has yet to fill their backup role.
Similarly, Vancouver could utilize picks to make a trade. While Vancouver has six defenders, they're still likely to select a seventh, or could revisit the free agency market after the draft.
Vancouver also has the luxury of multiple University of British Columbia grads in the city including Chanreet Bassi and Mackenzie Kordic who could be perfect fits for their fourth line, or to fill their three reserve positions.
