A report coming out of Sweden says that New York Sirens forward Noora Tulus is set to break her two-year contract with the PWHL and return to Sweden.
Originally reported by Lulea's Norrländska Socialdemokraten, it's believed Tulus could end up signing alongside fellow Finnish national team member Viivi Vainikka with the SDHL's Brynas.
Currently, the contract situation for Tulus is being looked at and no confirmation has come from any party about whether or not Tulus will be allowed to exit her contract, which runs through next season with the Sirens, and return to Europe. It's believed a decision on the matter will be made next week.
Tulus, 29, saw limited ice time with the last place New York Sirens despite being picked in the third round, 13th overall by the Sirens in the 2024 PWHL Draft. She recorded only a goal and an assist in 30 games after scoring 61 points in 36 games last season for Lulea in the SDHL.
Several European players have been unhappy with their opportunities in the PWHL this season sparking rumours others could follow Tulus back to the SDHL.
One of the primary concerns for European players heading into next season is continued lack of development opportunities and ice time heading into the 2026 Olympics in Milano Cortina.
Tulus' lack of opportunity in New York was perplexing given the team's struggles and lack of scoring outside Sarah Fillier, Alex Carpenter, Jessie Eldridge and Abby Roque. The team utilized several players on their top two lines, but quickly abandoned Tulus to a depth role where she played less than 11 minutes per night. It's likely however, that the team would give Tulus a renewed opportunity in their top six next season as she now has a year of experience in North America under her belt, which conceivably would allow her to take a large step forward offensively.
The perception among European players, after seeing how many players including Tulus, Daniela Pejsova, Emma Soderberg, Klara Peslarova, Noemi Neubauerova, and Anna Meixner and others were utilized this season kept many from declaring for the 2025 PWHL Draft this season. There will be a few European players entering the PWHL Draft from the SDHL this season including Michelle Karvinen and Sara Hjalmarsson, but the bulk of talent in the league is staying in Europe until after the 2026 Olympics before they try their luck with the PWHL.
While some European players struggled to adjust to the smaller ice, faster and more skilled game, and more physical approach, others thrived. Susanna Tapani, Maja Nylen Persson, Ronja Savolainen, Aneta Tejralova, Katerina Mrazova, Alina Muller, and Tereza Vanisova are among the many who carved out contributing roles this season.
