The Minnesota Frost are the defending Walter Cup champions. They begin that defence at their home opener December 1. Here are three Minnesota Frost games to circle on your calendar.
All eyes were on the PWHL Monday morning when the league unveiled their 2024-25 regular season schedule.
The six teams released their schedules in unison, and fans began circling marquee games on the calendar they hoped to nab tickets for. In honour of the schedule released on Monday, let’s look at four must-watch Minnesota Frost games this season.
The last time Frost fans saw their team play at the Xcel Energy Center was May 26. The Boston Fleet silenced the raucous crowd as the home squad dropped a 1-0 decision in double overtime.
Instead of a celebration in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Fleet sent the Walter Cup Final to Game Five, where the Frost finished the job and avoided blowing a 2-1 series lead.
On Dec. 1, the Minnesota faithful will see their team in action for the first time since winning the Walter Cup when they take on the New York Sirens. Regardless of the result, the night should serve as a victory lap for the fans.
The contest will also be the first time in PWHL history that two first-overall picks will face off against one another. Taylor Heise, the reigning playoff MVP and 2023 first-overall selection, will play Sarah Fillier, New York’s premier prospect and 2024 first-overall pick.
What might become a budding PWHL rivalry between the two young stars will also be a preview for the decade on the international stage, with Heise representing the United States of America and Fillier, Canada.
After their home opener, Minnesota begins a brief two-game road trip playing against the two squads they bear en route to their Walter Cup Championship. First is the Boston Fleet’s home opener — a rematch of the Walter Cup Final on Dec. 4.
The last time the Frost and Fleet played at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, the game ended with Kendall Coyne Schofield hoisting the Walter Cup above her head.
Boston looks to defeat their playoff rivals, while the Frost aims to play spoiler.
The third game of the season is the third must-watch game for the Frost. The last time these two teams clashed was in the opening round of the PWHL playoffs. The Sceptres gave up for goals in their final game of the season as the Frost surged, pulling off an improbable reverse sweep.
The Frost will enter Coca-Cola Coliseum on Dec. 7 and look to pick up where they left off and push their winning streak versus the Sceptres to three games. The match will be Minnesota’s final game before the first of three league-wide international breaks.
