Rachel Flanagan, long time head coach at the University of Guelph, has been hired as an assistant coach for PWHL Toronto.
PWHL Toronto has hired Rachel Flanagan to serve as an assistant coach alongside head coach Troy Ryan for the team's inaugural season.
Flanagan has spent the last 16 seasons coaching the University of Guelph women's hockey team. The University of Guelph is calling Flanagan's departure a one-year leave of absence.
"I am grateful for the incredible opportunity to have coached and represented the Gryphons," said Flanagan in a Guelph news release. "It has been a long time coming for women's hockey to have a pro league that I feel is sustainable with all the resources women's hockey players need to be professionals. I am very excited and proud to be a part of this new league."
Flanagan won three OUA championships with Guelph in 2016, 2017, and 2019. She also led Guelph to their first ever USports national championship in 2019.
Flanagan is a five-time recipient of the OUA's women's hockey coach of the year award.
The hiring of Flanagan for Toronto continues the Hockey Canada trend as Flanagan recently coached at Hockey Canada's Fall national team selection camp.
Katie Mora wll take over as acting head coach for Guelph.
