Emma Woods fired a laser over Maddie Rooney's shoulder scoring the game winner in overtime for PWHL New York, and handing Minnesota their first loss of the year in overtime 3-2.
PWHL Minnesota jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game in front of 7,951 fans at the Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul, Minnesota early on, but New York fought their way back sending the game to overtime. In the extra frame, only moments before Woods ended the game, Grace Zumwinkle was awarded a penalty shot in overtime, but could not beat Corinne Schroeder who made 39 saves in the win.
To open the game, Lee Stecklein scored her first of the year for Minnesota. Minutes later, Kelly Pannek picked off a pass near the blueline and walked in alone beating Schroeder.
It looked like Minnesota would run away with their fourth straight win of the year, but New York did not quit, and netminder Corinne Schroeder settled in.
On the power play in the second period, Ella Shelton found Alex Carpenter back door to pull within one. Passing the midway point of the third down by a goal, Maddie Rooney put on a clinic turning away New York chances before Jessie Eldridge found a loose puck in the slot and shovelled home the equalizer.
In overtime, after Zumwinkle's missed attempt from being hauled down by New York defender Brooke Hobson, Woods ended the game with Shelton picking up her second assist of the game and Jade Downie-Landry also assisting.
After opening their season 3-0, the loss was Minnesota first of the season, although they still picked up a point.
Prior to the game New York signed reserve player Alexa Gruschow to a standard player agreement after they announced forward Jill Saulnier had been placed on long term injured reserve with a lower body injury.
New York returns to action Tuesday in Montreal, while Minnesota travels to Ottawa on Wednesday.
