A pair of young defenders signed in the PWHL this week in Minnesota's Maggie Flaherty and Montreal's Mariah Keopple.

Flaherty was Minnesota's fourth round pick, 24th overall in the 2023 PWHL Draft. The University of Minnesota-Duluth signed a two-year deal with Minnesota.

“Maggie is coming to us from the UMD Bulldogs where she had a stellar 25-point senior season. She has represented Team USA in U18 World Championship games and will bring international level experience for us," said Minnesota head coach Charloe Burggraf. "She is an offensive minded defender who will fit well in our playing style.”

Flaherty, 23, had originally signed to stay in her home state with the PHF's Minnesota Whitecaps, but will now get that opportunity with PWHL Minnesota.

“I am very excited about staying in my home state and getting to play near my family and friends," said Flaherty. "I can’t wait to get the season going and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play for Team Minnesota in the state of hockey.”

Montreal Signs Free Agent Mariah Keopple

Montreal has signed Princeton graduate Mariah Keopple to her first professional contract. The 23-year-old Wisconsin product signed a one-year deal with PWHL Montreal.

Keopple recorded 15 points in 31 games last year for Princeton. She went unselected in the PWHL Draft, but quickly earned an invite and contract with Montreal.

“Mariah brings a presence to the defensive core. She's a young, developing player that we're excited about!," said Danièle Sauvageau, Montreal's general manager.

“I’m so excited to be signing with Montreal and exploring a new city, and I cannot wait to get started with the team and incredible staff," said Keopple. "Montreal is such a beautiful city full of tradition, and I know it is going to be such an amazing market to be a part of.”
