Stan Kasten explains why the PWHL, a company with a single owner, will not be hiring, or needing a commissioner any time soon.
Professional sports leagues have a commissioner. It's almost a certainty among leagues across the globe. It won't, however, be the case for the PWHL as PWHL advisory board member Stan Kasten stated this week he does not foresee the PWHL needing or wanting a commissioner any time soon.
The reasoning?
Unlike most leagues, the PWHL is a company as much as a league, owned by a single entity, the Mark Walter Group.
According to Kasten, the role of a commissioner is often managing the needs and wants of various owners, along with overseeing the league's operations. In the PWHL, since there are not differing interests among the teams, as no team will be profiting over the others, and where every team's bottom line impacts the overall business, there is no need for a commissioner.
