PWHL Draft prospects Megan Carter, Gwyneth Philips, and Katy Knoll of Northeastern discuss the draft, their season, and impressions of the league.
Ten former Northeastern Huskies played in the PWHL this season. That list included standouts like Alina Muller, Aerin Frankel, Maureen Murphy, and Hayley Scamurra.
If Gwyneth Philips, Megan Carter, and Katy Knoll have their way, that number will grow again next season as the trio, who played their final season of NCAA eligibility this year at Northeastern, have declared for the PWHL Draft.
"Watching all the Husky alums on all the different teams throughout the league is just so exciting and now that we all have the chance to have the opportunity to potentially play in the league, it's a great time in women's hockey," said forward Katy Knoll. Knoll twice represented Team USA at the U-18 World Championships and this past season scored 11 goals and 28 points in 39 games for Northeastern.
If and when the three Huskies are selected, it will be one of the biggest moments to date in their hockey careers. Philips has had many of those moments over the past two seasons being named the 2023 NCAA Goaltender of the Year, a 2024 First Team All-American, and earning a spot on USA's national team for the 2024 World Championships. Wherever she ends up in the PWHL, Philips hopes to make a difference.
"I'm not going to be too picky, I'm just looking forward to wherever I end up going," said Philips. "I hope to bring some sort of success to the team wherever I end up."
As Carter, who captained the Huskies this season and has been a player closely watched by Hockey Canada, she's excited for where the league and her career is going.
"To see what's come with this league is just surreal," she said.
Carter is expected to be the first of the three Huskies selected at the draft. The former Canadian U-18 national team member scored 25 points in 34 games this season from Northeastern's blueline and she was named the 2023 Hockey East Defender of the Year.
