
The Charlotte Checkers and AHL Board of Governors announced that Zawyer Sports & Entertainment have acquired a controlling interest in the Checkers, noting the day-to-day business of the team will not be impacted.
Michael Kahn, the Checkers' owner since 2006 and current CEO, has transitioned to the team's largest minority partner.
Charlotte will remain affiliates with the Florida Panthers, who they have been partners with since the 2020-21 season. Their ECHL affiliate heading into next season are the expansion Savannah Ghost Pirates.
Zawyer Sports and Entertainment have a significant hockey portfolio, they currently own and operate the Jacksonville Icemen, Savannah Ghost Pirates, and Tahoe Knight Monsters of the ECHL, they also operate the Allen Americans and Atlanta Gladiators.
60-time NASCAR winning driver Kevin Harvick, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, former NFL linebacker Myles Jack, Carolina Panthers; J.J. Jansen, and NASCAR analyst Regan Smith are among prominent partners of Zawyers Sports & Entertainment.
The Checkers relocated to Charlotte prior to the 2010-11 AHL season, they have twice won the Atlantic Division and won the 2019 Calder Cup.
