2021 first-round pick will serve as a depth option

The Edmonton Oilers have announced they recalled their 2021 first-round pick Xavier Bourgault from the Bakersfield Condors.

The 21-year-old had 20 points in 55 games this season, his second as a professional.

An offensively minded forward, Bourgault's second AHL season was a step back from his first year. He missed several weeks with a shoulder injury and it clearly impacted his game.

The Condors were swept in the opening round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Oilers hope that Bourgault can be a top-six contributor in the future and spending as much time around the NHL team as possible should help his development.
