    Former Cleveland Monsters captain Stefan Matteau is joining the team as an assistant coach after announcing his retirement in May as originally reported by Aaron Portzline and confirmed by the team.

    Matteau served as captain and recorded two goals and seven points in just 15 games with the Monsters last season due to injury.

    The 31-year-old announced his retirement in May on his Instagram due to injuries and a desire a stay healthy.

    A first round pick of the New Jersey Devils in 2012, Matteau appeared in 92 career NHL games with the Devils, Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Colorado Avalanche, racking up six goals and 11 points. 

    The Chicago, Ill., native notched 76 goals and 169 point sin 411 career AHL games with the Monsters, Albany Devils, St. John's IceCaps, Chicago Wolves, and Colorado Eagles. 

    Matteau joins goaltending coach Brad Thiessen and associate coach Chris Bergeron on head coach Trent Vogelhuber's staff.
