2022 second overall pick will play big minutes in the AHL after being sent down

The New Jersey Devils announced they have assigned 2022 second overall pick Simon Nemec to their AHL affiliate Utica Comets.

Nemec has played in nine games for the Devils this season and recorded one assist. He is averaging 16:07 of ice time per game.

The 20-year-old spent most of last season with the Devils and notched 19 points in 60 games. He also had eight points in 13 games for the Comets. He has 42 points in 72 career AHL games.

Once Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce returned from their respective injuries it has been difficult for Nemec to find playing time, he has not played in a game since Oct. 22.

Nemec should immediately step into a big role in the AHL and will join fellow top prospect Seamus Casey on the Comets blueline.

The Comets have had a horrendous start to the season and are winless through nine games, they have recorded only one point in a shootout loss. The team relieved Kevin Dineen of his head coaching duties yesterday and named Ryan Parent Interim Head Coach.

Nemec's first opportunity to play for Utica comes on Nov. 8 against the Cleveland Monsters.
