Howson helped league grow to 32 teams in his first four years as President

The American Hockey League Board of Governors announced that Scott Howson has signed a contract extension to remain President and CEO of the AHL.

The agreement is a multi-year deal, his original contract was set to expire after the 2024-25 season.

Howson helped the AHL get through difficult financial and logistical times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout his tenure the AHL has been able to expand to 32 teams, matching up 1:1 with the NHL, they also expanded the field in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The 64-year-old was originally voted in as the tenth President in AHL history in 2020, having previously served on the Board of Governors when he was in management.

Howson played five seasons as a professional hockey player that included winning IHL Rookie of the Year, 18 games in the NHL, and 110 games in the AHL.

His re-introduction to the AHL came 10 years after his retirement when he joined the Cape Breton Oilers front office. He went on to serve 26 years in various roles with the Columbus Blue Jackets - including General Manager - and Edmonton Oilers.
